This blog is similar to my last one in that it's mostly informational. I wanted to share this website because it has a lot of information about biliary atresia and nutrition. I read through the sections on nutrition, part one and two and the Q&A. I found the questions about yogurt really interesting because it seems to be all the rage now to feed your baby yogurt. When we asked our pediatrician about using yogurt at 7 months, she said she preferred us to wait until 9 months, 11 months if we wanted to be really careful but overall it would be fine.
Logan has done surprisingly well so far, he was taken off Pregestimil and MCT oil at 4 months. He got to drop most of his vitamins around that time as well, a few at 3 months even because he was absorbing them so well. We have been extremely blessed that he has not had to be on a feeding tube and has continued to gain weight, slowly but surely. Logan is really short and after reading through this I'm a little more worried about it than I was before. I trust his doctors so I'm sure if they were concerned they would tell us and of course I only have one other child and he was like 90% for height :) At 7 months, Logan has a pretty regular diet, he eats about 2-3 cans of baby food a day. At least one of those being a meat. And he's up to about 28-30 ounces of formula. And we have gone through a battle with finding the right formula for him! From Similac Advance to Pregestimil to ProSoBe to Gentlease to Enfamil AR which is what is working really well for him right now. And he is slowing getting to get some snacks like mild cheddar cheese puffs for babies and blueberry puffs. He has even been about to try some egg whites and noodles!
We want both of our kids to be healthy, of course. I guess I will probably be a little more overprotective about Logan. I really liked how the first part of the nutrition section talked about how important the first few years are of a child's life to receive proper nutrition. I don't want to offend anyone because that is not the purpose of any of my blogs but I hate seeing people give babies candy and soda and other garbage like that. Especially at only a few months old and most of the time because it's funny. Give me a break! I am not a perfect parent. I am not a health nut. Devin had candy and cake on his first birthday and I have pictures to prove it! He has eaten his fair share of fast food and drank soda and Gatorade. Logan will get cake on his birthday as well. But my mindset is changing. I have tried to make changes in my our lives to be healthier because for Logan that is going to be crucial! I want to be healthier for my kids and for myself. I want them to make better choices than I did and it's a slow process, it's a lifestyle change that is hard to make but we are going to work hard to get this right. Our boys have a chance to be healthy, thank God, and we as parents have to set a better example and show them how it's done :)
