It was the end of March before we had another real scare with Logan. Every day we watched him carefully and Logan, I'm sorry bud, but you got your temperature taken A LOT!! So i checked his temp like I always did and it was randomly 100.8 one day. So we paged Dr. Atay, took our first trip to the CHKD ER, which was a complete nightmare!!! They could not get a vein to get an IV in Logan, which is a pure torture to hold him down while they poke and poke and blow out vein after vein. We saw at least three different doctors who asked the same questions. How is he acting? Is his stool light? Is he throwing up anything green? Who lives at home? Does he go to daycare? Is anyone sick? How old is his brother? Is he sick? Is Logan eating? Is he sleeping? Why did you take his temp? Over and over. They wanted a full work up on him of course including a urine sample so they put a bag on. Of course they put it on wrong and it leaked all over Derek. And then they ripped it off his testicles. So then they decided they needed to do a catheter. Which they screwed up too and repeatedly jammed into him , I said this is about to be over with, he's in too much pain! when they finally got urine. Now we still needed blood .. And had three blown veins so far.
We had already learned that the best thing to do for Logan was to get a VAT team to put in his IV's. Most of the time it requires them using an ultrasound machine to find his veins. Once they arrived and got ready to I had an idea that turned out to be a good one. I put face right beside Logan's, covered us both up with my hair and started to whisper in his ear that everything was going to alright. I told him that we all loved him so much and he was our hero and that we know it hurts and it's not fair and we would take it away if we could but right now we just have to let these ladies take the blood because it is to help him and it would all be over soon. And I kissed his sweet little cheeks that were covered in tears and prayed that this time it would work. That was our first trip in the " hair tunnel" and it worked! Logan relaxed , they took the blood and left.
By this time we had been in the emergency room for six hours and we were exhausted. And annoyed at the ER nurses and doctors honestly. It was maybe 1 or 2 am. We got taken upstairs to room 727, we were pretty familiar with this floor from our stay after the Kasai but we were not expecting an overnight stay so we had nothing with us but Logan's diaper bag. And that was just the first of many problems...
No one likes hospital stays, one of the hardest parts for me is that we co-sleep. So none of us really like the sleeping arrangements. Logan looks so small in those big cribs that look like jails. And in this particular room the bed for Derek and I had was the worst thing I'd ever slept on! Well kinda slept on, for 15-20 minutes at a time, I'm a light sleeper so I wake up whenever the nurses and doctors and vitals people come in and when Logan wakes up. The doctor on call explained that he was putting Logan on two IV antibiotics and Motrin as well as his normal meds and we would play it by ear.
The next day my parents brought Devin and our stuff up to the hospital. They were doing cultures on Logan so he was in isolation, visitors just had to scrub in and out but doctors and nurses had to put full on gowns and masks and hair covers! The great news was the fever was gone and Logan was fine. Happy, smiles, probably wondering why we were there. And so the day went just like the night they would continue IV antibiotics, we would wait for the cultures and just see how it went. The doctors came , asked all the same questions, couldn't find anything and so it went for the rest of the day.
That night was the longest one. Because Logan was sick? No. Because Carmela was crazy. After the Kasai, I only had an issue with one nurse and things got downright tense and we sent her out of the room. Carmela. And she was back. And just like last time , she came in the room EVERY HOUR, shined the flashlight RIGHT IN LOGAN'S FACE, insisted on WAKING HIM UP!! And then INSISTING WE FEED HIM. This time I remained calm and explained, again, he didn't need to eat every hour. And thanked God when she left!
The doctors finally assumed this was cholongitis or something viral. They said this would be a short visit for him, only four days. Which is when Derek and I really started to understand that we got lucky again. This could have been much worse. We couldn't take Logan out of the room because of the isolation so we just had to keep ourselves occupied. Sometimes we get a little nutty. We take selfies and talk crazy nonsense. I wish Devin was able to stay with us but as much as we try to make it seem ok for Logan, it just sucks to stay in the hospital.
Only one of Logan's liver enzymes stayed elevated after the four days of antibiotics and we finally got to go home. When Logan saw me packing his diaper bag under his stroller he started smiling and reaching for it. He knew it was time to go!
